AIARE 2 Course

AIARE 2 Course

The AIARE 2 Avalanche Course is a 3-day program (plus 1 evening session) designed for backcountry leaders and experienced travelers. Build on the decision-making framework from AIARE 1 and gain advanced skills in snowpack, weather, and hazard assessment for more complex terrain.

You’ll learn to:

  • Identify where specific avalanche hazards exist and assess consequences
  • Interpret weather, snow, and avalanche observations to choose terrain
  • Apply leadership skills for group travel and decision-making
  • Use a forecasting framework when limited data is available

  • Format: 1 evening online session + 3 field days
  • Location: Snoqualmie Pass (alternate location if conditions require)
  • Duration: 3 days + 1 evening
  • Price: $675

Online Session | Virtual Classroom: 7:00-8:30PM

  • Introductions
  • Course agenda, goals and learning outcomes
  • Review Decision Making Framework: Prepare, Teamwork, Plan, Ride Safely, Debrief
  • Route planning and run lists
  • Uncertainty - identifying uncertainty is the first step to mitigating risk
  • Teamwork and Heuristics
  • Homework: tour planning, run lists, prep equipment, short video (1 hour)


Day 1 | Field Day: 8:00am-4:00pm, Exact Location TBD

  • Morning meeting - instructor led
  • Snow pit craft, layer ID, fracture character
  • Execute student-led tour plan
  • Focus on uncertainty in terrain
  • Field observations: track conditions and changes
  • ID avalanche terrain and discuss consequences
  • Acknowledge uncertainty and discuss consequences
  • Terrain management
  • Debrief - instructor led


Day 2 | Field Day: 8:00am-4:00pm, Exact Location TBD

  • Morning meeting - student led
  • Execute student-led tour
  • Focus on uncertainty about conditions
  • Snow pit craft - different aspect and elevation
  • Debrief - student led


Day 3 | Field Day: 8:00am-4:00pm, Exact Location TBD

  • Morning meeting - student led
  • Execute student led tour
  • Focus on uncertainty within team and heuristics
  • Debrief - student led


 


*Note: Like any day in the mountains, maintaining flexibility with the itinerary is paramount. There are many things outside of our control such as road conditions, snow cover, weather, and human factors that could alter the planned itinerary.
